Photographs of Umbria Italy - Orvieto, Assisi, Spoleto

Umbria, the Tuscan neighbor gets less attention than Tuscany but it's hill towns have all the adventure of next door.

Assisi is a popular tourist destination, yet it is probably one of the cleanest cities in Italy that I have seen.

Perugia is famed for its chocolate festival, which we happened to attend. Unfortunately I was sick and missed the enjoyment that could have been had from the experience.

Spoleto is famous for its summer music festival. We visited in autumn and explored its worn streets and stayed in a palazzo where we had the elegant dining room to ourselves.

Orvieto stands atop a rocky outcrop and was a pleasant day-trip by train from Rome.

Yes, there is much to explore in Umbria. Someday I hope to return.

Steps and Red Ivy in Assisi

This photograph was taken on my 2005 visit to Italy. The scene was one that required patience as these steps had a constant flow of people and I had to play a long waiting game to get the right moment (you can read more about it in my blog).

Lamp and Details in Assisi

It is amazing that I even have this shot in my portfolio. I was attracted by the light as it struck the buildings differently. However, to achieve this perspective I had to mount my camera on a tripod, set the timer and hold the tripod up above my head, stabilizing it on a railing. It took several tries but I captured the scene.

when we visited Spoleto in 2005 it had a weathered and worn look. There was a lot of remodeling going on with the old buildings but I thought sepia conveyed that aged ambiance appropriately.
