Slovenia, part of the former Yugoslavia is a beautiful country with the Julian Alps in the north and the lovely old capital city of Ljubljana. I visited Slovenia in the fall of 2008, coupling it with time spent in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy.
As we transferred trains in a somewhat rundown old communist era train station on the border, I wondered what lay in store. As the train crossed through the Alps and I saw the beautiful blue rivers flowing through the valleys in Slovenia I was awed by the beauty. I hope someday I might return to explore the region more thoroughly.

Doorway and Ivy in Ljubljana
I found the red ivy, combined with the architecture in this composition appealing. However, as I was setting up my tripod a group of teenagers walked up at sat down on these steps, apparently deliberately. They lit up their cigarettes and so began the waiting game. Eventually they moved on and I was able to get my image. Since I have sold several of these prints I guess it was worth the wait.
Blue Doors in Ljubljana
More art nouveau architecture in Ljubljana . These pale blue doors complement the subdued stone surrounding them.
Trail Through Vintgar Gorge
The trail through Vintgar Gorge, roughly a mile in length, is not a long nor arduous hike by any means, but the gorge itself is spectacular. The Radovna River winds through the gorge in a series of waterfalls and quiet pools and, at times, the trail hugs the cliffs by means of a wooden boardwalk (seen here) lending an air of adventure to the trek.
Slovenian Beehive
Slovenia has a rich apiculture (beekeeping) tradition. Colorfully painted beehives, like this one, can be seen in the area around Lake Bled. In fact, we visited the apiculture museum in Radovljica and found it fascinating.
Cobblers Bridge in Ljubljana
Morning reflections accent the art nouveau Cobblers Bridge in Ljubljana. Although there has been a bridge in this location since the middle ages, the current bridge was designed by Joseph Plecnik and constructed in the 20th century.
Vintgar Gorge in Autumn
Autumn colors bring beauty to Vintgar Gorge as the Radovna River winds through the canyon.
Docked Pletnas On Lake Bled
Fall colors on the distant shore of Lake Bled serve as a backdrop for three docked pletnas. The boats, referred to as pletnas, are active throughout the day taking tourists to the island in the lake. I was drawn by the composition of the wood planks on the dock creating leading lines to the boats on this peaceful morning.
Quiet Street and Bicycles in Ljubljana
I thought a slight soft focus and warm digital filtering created an added ambiance to the dappled light of this scene.
Autumn Along Lake Bohinj
Autumn colors reflect on Lake Bohinj nestled among peaks of the Julian Alps. We took a bus from Bled to the lake and the trip back was indeed memorable. The bus driver drove like a wildman all the time watchinga show on the little television screen mounted on his dashboard. I was quite relieved when we finally made it back to the town of Bled.

Slovenian Hayrack and Woodpile
Walking through the countryside in Slovenia allows one to stop and enjoy life at a slower pace. To the side of this barn stacked with wood, is a typical Slovenian hayrack, while the Julian Alps rise in the background.

Stairway in Radovlica
I was drawn by the architectural elements in this image. The composition of these elements combines with the light colors to create a high key feel to this image.
Window and Pediment in Ljubljana
I was particularly drawn to the warm colors of this ornate window and pediment in Ljubljana.

On the Road to Zasip
Our day trip from Bled to Vintgar Gorge consisted of an outbound bus trip followed by a day of hiking, and then walking back to town. The return hike from Vintgar Gorge involved a mixture of trails and roads. The quaint rural setting of the return hike was marvelous with the Julian Alps serving as a scenic backdrop.
Slovenia Woods in Autumn
Fall colors grace a woodland hillside in Vintgar Gorge.
Green Home in Radovljica Slovenia
Shabby chic might be the way one would describe this old home in the town of Radovljica.
