Yellow Farmhouse in Tuscany
Believe it or not this photograph was taken in the fall of 2005. The bright green grass looks more like the color of springtime because it had just rained and there was a thin cloud layer creating bright and even light. I couldn't believe how green it was.
Evening Light On the Road to Pienza
As I passed this scene on the road I was struck by the lighting. I had to go a ways before I could turn around. Returning to the scene I found a pull off and the light was spectacular. Late afternoon-early evening light with brooding clouds in the background. I am very fond of this image.
Earthtones and Textures of Tuscany
Autumn in Tuscany means brown fields, but I am amazed at al the different tones. As the sun and clouds move across the sky the shadows and contours highlights the tonal differences.
Morning Sky and Abandoned Farmhouse in Tuscany
I was out early in the morning and it had been raining. The scenery was bland and it was cold, so I decided to scout for places I might return to at a later time. The road that this farmhouse was on had been closed due to construction repairs on a bridge, but I decided to drive down the road to see what was there. There was absolutely no traffic on the road and all of a sudden the rain stopped and the sky began to clear. There was no pull off, but since there was no traffic I just parked my car on the road and got out to photograph. The clouds were rolling across the sky rapidly and the light was in constant change. All I can say was that it was simply amazing.
Farm Fields of Tuscany
This photograph is among my favorite landscapes from my fall 2014 trip to Tuscany. The contours of the land combined with the colors and tones create leading lines that complement the cypress lined road to the farmhouse.

Classic Tuscany.
Daybreak On the Farm Fields of Tuscany
As the morning sun rose and bathed the fields in a warm glow, the fog began to dissipate. I was drawn to the curving furrow that traversed the fields in this scene as it created a leading line that combined with the slopes in drawing the eye of the viewer to the farmhouse in the distance.
Farmhouse and Illuminated Hill in Tuscany
Tuscany is a lesson in light. Clouds moving across the sky can create patches of illumination that come and go. I was fortunate enough to capture this moment in time before it quickly disappeared.
Farmhouse and Contours in Tuscany
I thought a narrow landscape format suited this scene and accented the contours and tones.
Morning Sun Over the Rolling Hills of Tuscany
Sunrise in Tuscany can be so beautiful. When I stopped to set up for this image I could barely make out the features of the landscape but was willing to take the chance because I could tell it was going to be a spectacular sunrise.
Morning Sunlight On a Tuscan Valley
This image was taken the first morning I was in Val d'Orcia. Having arrived in the evening on the day before, I had no idea where to go the next morning. I drove out into the landscape blindly on that first morning heading toward Pienza and came across this scene. The morning light striking this hilltop as the distant scenery fades into haze was sublime.
Morning Sunlight On a Tuscan Farm
I love the warmth of this scene as the morning light baths this farm in its glow.
Sunrise Over Mount Amiata
Mount Amiata dominates the Val d'Orcia and can be seen wherever you go it seems. The colors of this sunrise generate a calm and peaceful feeling as the mountain begins to be illuminated at daybreak.
Sunset Over Cortona
The popularity of Cortona in recent years has been a result of Frances Mayes' book "Under the Tuscan Sun". However, this sunset illustrates what is so appealing about this Tuscan hill town.
Tuscan Autumn
Another of my favorites from my fall 2014 trip to Tuscany. The golden autumn sunlight and haze across the fields in this scene captures the feel of Tuscany so well.
Tuscan Farms In the Morning Light
Another view as the day unfolds across the Val d'Orcia.
Tuscan Olive Grove 2
This scene was captured in the hills above Florence. It has been digitally softened and warmed to create an atmosphere of romance.
Tuscan Olive Grove 1
During our fall 2005 trip to Europe we decided to take a bus to Fiesole on the outskirts of Florence and hike back using a hiking guide I had brought. When we came upon this olive grove we were lost but the sky was bright and overcast illuminating the green grass. I was amazed at how bright green it was considering it was October. Shortly after taking this photograph we found the path and went on our way only to have a torrential rain come upon us. Wet and cold we made our way to a road and took a bus back into Florence.

Winding Lane in Tuscany
The famed winding road to La Foce as the morning sun moves across the landscape.
