Photographs of Johnson's Shut Ins State Park

As the Black River flows through the St Francois Mountains in the southern Missouri Ozarks it flows through Johnson's Shut-Ins. These are the most notable of many such shut-ins found in Missouri where the river channel meets bedrock resistant to erosion. The rhyolite bedrock here has created chutes and cascades through which the river tumbles as it flows through the valley.
