Photographs of Amidon Conservation Area and Castor River Shut Ins

Amidon Memorial Conservation Area is located in the St. Francois Mountains of the southern Missouri Ozarks. The area is small in size but possesses a unique beauty. The granite shut ins afford hours of exploration for a photographer. The Castor River narrows as it channels through the shut ins, where the stream has eroded and cut channels into the granite bedrock and boulders are strewn about the canyon. Although the pink granite is not uncommon in the area, it is still somewhat unique. Depending on the water levels, anything from small waterfalls to a rushing torrent can be experienced. Although the area is a popular swimming spot in the summer, it is a quiet place of solitude the rest of the year.
